(450) Magnum Dynalab FT-11, there were three different versions of the FT-11; 1988, 1990 and 1993.

Magnum Dynalab FT-11 naked

The FM-only FT-11, like other Magnum Dynalab tuners, has an analog-style tuning knob but uses varactor tuning (the equivalent of 4 gangs) rather than a mechanical tuning capacitor, MD's typical minimalist styling and a large digital frequency readout. With a single IF bandwidth and only 2 ceramic filters, the FT-11 needs some help in the selectivity department. Bill Ammons' amplified filter board, which would convert the 2 filters into 4, would be one possible solution. FM Tuner Info panelist Jim listened to two versions of the FT-11 and has this report: "The earlier version had what looks to be the same audio stage as the FT-101 and 101A. This includes the dated NE5532 op-amp. Both the FT-11 and FT-101 also use 4.7 µF output caps. It should not be surprising the the FT-11 sounds much like the FT-101 in stock form, with both having a rather recessed midrange. The bass isn't bad but there is a little too much treble. The ICs in the older version are an LM4500AM, the 5532 (which they painted over with red paint), and an LM1965N. The new version looks to get its audio from a larger IC. It uses the same LM1965N, but downstream there is a Philips TDA1578A chip instead. The newer version of the FT-11 has a vent on the top and much better-quality RCA output jacks, and is also sonically much more pleasant to listen to. The treble is just there without being in your face and the midrange gives a more realistic image between the speakers. In the photo, the old version has the blue board. You can see the 5322 op-amp to the right of the filters in the bottom right corner (the black square). There's a very straightforward mod that will really improve the sound: Replace the 5532 IC with a good bi-FET and put 5uf or larger good coupling caps at the output." See how the two versions of the FT-11 sounded compared to other top tuners on Shootouts page, and read panelist David "A"'s Ricochet.
...naim aro...sounds very natural & bouncy, not as edgy as ittok...The low-mass, Naim uni-pivot tone-arm is designed to offer the very best phono cartridges delicate yet precise support at all audio frequencies.
Its geometry and construction ensure that difficulties with warped records, end of side distortion and temperature or humidity problems are greatly reduced. It incorporates a fixed headshell and an extremely stiff, light arm-tube. The low slung counterweight, used to adjust tracking force, places the mass in exactly the right position for both stability and minimum inertia and will remain set even when the arm-tube is lifted clear of the turntable.
Arm-tops can be purchased separately to facilitate easy and fast cartridge changes without the need for realignment and recalibration.

(650) extended highs & lows, good separation, detailed & warm, what else to ask for? mids...the vocals is lacking the thickness, call it coloration but I enjoy full-bodied vocals...Cambridge Audio’s flagship CD player, the 640C builds on the features of the 540C and has scooped a plethora of awards. These include Five Star and Best Buy gongs from leading publication What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision - which described it as ‘a fine all rounder… way beyond what we’d expect of a player at this price’ The 640C has also won a number of other coveted awards from respected publications including The Sunday Times, FHM, Hi-Fi Choice (Best Buy) and Hi-Fi Plus. In short, the 640C has become universally known the world-over as the ultimate budget CD player. With a completely separate power supply and upgraded audio filter and regulator stages, the 640C benefits from incredibly low distortion and excellent signal to noise ratio with a high specification Wolfson WM8740 24-bit/192kHz DAC. (200) Aesthetically similar to Marantz high-end SACD players and at its price whats more to ask? remote? yes it doesn't come with remote...inconvenient though, but I have enough remotes in the house...its sound is slightly laid-back, relax mode, typical current marantz receivers character, stock white/red cables sounds thin...to turn this fella into a tuner to die for...you need interconnects like the Ortofon 6.7N-AC 50 (200) and JPS Labs GPA-2 powercord, which incidently I have spare pairs lying around...with the cables added there's noticeably more PRAT and resolution and more WARMTH.

The ST6003 FM/MW stereo analogue tuner combines high-quality audio components for the best sound with functionality and ease of use – virtually guaranteeing drift-free reception. The ST6003’s RDS tuner means you can tune by frequency, or by programme type, and behind its solid aluminium front panel sits a high-sensitivity front-end. The new, full dot-matrix display ensures the frequencies, and radio data – such as traffic/news flashes – are clearly displayed. Extra controllability is also available via Marantz D-Bus. From the manual frequency, direct input and triple IR-code possibilities open up, so when using one, two, or three tuners within the same set-up are available.
The L-02T is sonically the best stock transistor tuner I've listened to in my system. It has very good bass and a rich, full midrange, not rich or full like a tubed Mac MR 67 but a more neutral sound as you would expect from a transistor tuner. The treble isn't hot or irritating but does have some extra sibilance due to all those old electrolytics in the signal path. The audio stage uses four 8-legged op-amps (4564 DA) supported by four 16-legged op-amps (MB84066B).
Former Gold Caps Champions HiFi-Tuning & Cheapo Clear Glass in a showdown...To improve resonant behavior, the HiFi-Tuning Fuses' body is ceramic rather than glass. The end caps are silver layered with copper and gold, the intermediate copper purportedly preventing interactions between silver and gold. The actual wire is raw silver even for the slo-blow variants (they are usually silver clad at best), a world exclusive...these gold caps are a tad warmer than the current SilverStars...

(60) HiFi Tuning SilverStar Fuses are made from ceramic bodies which are tuned for resonance control. Inside the fuses you’ll find pure silver wiring which is precisely calibrated for its rated capacity. This silver filament is then connected to pure silver end caps which are uncoated for maximum signal transfer. Unlike the slight warmth the standard gold-plating imparts, SilverStar Fuses are more neutral, faster and more dynamic...and they are the 2nd most $$$...
Let's understand a little more on the former cables.

MIT cables are used in many recording and film studios. For the past 20 years - MIT Audio Interfaces claims to "deliver the highest degree of signal integrity! Ordinary cables, even 'high-end' brands, can alter the musical signals they transport. These signal alterations can significantly reduce the system's sound quality. Only cables with MIT's patented Mulitpole™ Technology can reveal the full sonic potential of your audio system." AVt-2 Bi-Wire features & benefits from:

MIT's Patented Parallel Multipole™ Network Technology— Provides 10 Articulation Poles for improved performance!

Four conductor Varilay® geometry— Parallel networks with patented geometry for improved performance over “just wire” .

P.E. insulation— Reduces non-linear dielectric-based distortions for excellent low level detail & superior sound.

Includes the iconn™ interchangeable connection system— Makes speaker connections simple and easy.

BiWire: Eight conductor geometry— For increased bass performance and true bi-wire performance. Separate runs and networks for high & low.

The AVt-2 was replaced with a winner of endless awards decades long, the understated...8TC - LEGENDARY MUSICALITY

Consisting of sixteen individual TCSS conductors, eight blue and eight black, arranged in a large format braid. Individual conductors are Hyper-pure copper and utilize our proven VariStrand™ conductor geometry. The insulating dielectric is a high pressure-low temperature-extruded Teflon®. The aggregate wire size is two 9 awg conductors. By virtue of its full, accurate and dimensional sound, 8TC ranks as one of the best high-end audio values of all time and, without question, is the best sounding moderately priced cable on the market.

Eight blue and eight black braided conductors

2 x 9 awg / 2.62mm

VariStrand™ Hyper-pure copper

Teflon® dielectric

Basic Electrical Specifications (DUT: 8TC 2.5m bare wire ends)
• (Cp) parallel capacitance: 821.0 pF @ 20 kHz
• (Ls) series inductance: 0.345 H @ 20 kHz
• (Rdc) dc loop resistance: 0.018
• (Xt) total reactance: 0.044 @ 20 kHz
• Frequency response ? 0.5 dB: dc - 300 kHz

Xindak SS-1 jumpers used with 8TC was musical bliss, however their union lasted only 4 months. SS-1 is made of imported 7N multi-strand copper wires twisted with 4N silver wires. Its terminal is 24K gilded banana plug and loudspeaker fork respectively and the external is wrapped with high quality thermal shrinkage pipes.

This cable is mainly used to replace the shorting sheet copper post between the binding posts for alt and woofer input of sound box, which adds more flavor to the expressive force of music and is specially designed for audiophiles seeking for high standard and high grade.

The MIT has excellent details & resolutions albeit scratchy highs, thin vocals and compromises on the lows, bass and punch. Rolling tubes and swopping interconnects couldn't relieves its weakness.

On the other hand, the 8TC is an excellent cable, synergizes extremely well in my system; between amp and speakers. I wouldn't missed the world for it, 2A3C is extremely affordable compare to NOS and other famed new productions of Emission Labs EML meshplates, AVVT, KR, EAT, JJ 2A3-40, Sophia 2A3 mesh plate globe and TJ meshplate. OTK 5U4G has pretty good dynamics. An equivalent to 5C3S and 5U3C russian made. Parallel black plates with springs on top, similar structure to the Sovtek 5U4G but rebranded OTK. Apparently Sovtek has ceased their 5U4G production, I wonder why...I quite like the Sovteks and the ShuGuang's 5U4G brown base 4pins.

For the longest time, these tubes when plugged-in are the most enjoyable combination. As new productions, what's lacking are the high-end bits: refinement. And for this reason, I'm constantly evoke to hunt for other substitutions with preference for new current productions than NOS...$$$...and very rare. Though enjoyable but it's really the high-end bits we audiophools want.
NOS Brimar 6SN7GTY CV1988 is a rare and sought after tube. They are refined, detailed with full bandwidth.

It's strengths are its super soundstage - very wide open sound, it's a very musical tube, good midrange detail and high-end extension, bass ok but not thunderous.

Compared with RCA JAN-CRC-6SN7 VT-231 gray phosphor coated glass, brimar is warm, lush and full-bodied ideal for a thin sounding system, it'll balance things up...good for vocals, it's so smooth, detailed, transparent, and fills the room with sound.

Compared with Sylvania VT-231 their highs are more remote, and the bass is much lower and more prominent. They give an excellent and very lifelike presentation of orchestral works. Very dynamic overall performer!

The brimars were fabricated with several outlook, black base 1970's, brown base 1972's, metal base, clear glass and so on.

The combo are current productions but extremely dynamic with lots'a prat, heavy bass, presence & power aplenty, they voiced and sounded unlike a flea 3.5watt SET, though lack refinement and delicate detail extension. These daily regulars are Tung-Sol 6SN7GTB, ShuGuang 2A3C and Sovtek 5U4G. The preamp tubes are dampened with herbie's microphonics-absorbing pads on titanium C-rings whilst the power and rectifier are dampened with plumber's white teflon tape.

With the extended high frequencies, refinement and delicate sonics of excellent unaffordable set-ups in recent HK HiFi Show 2008 still lingering and spinning in my dizzy head, I thought "what the heck perhaps my setup can sound just as good" I replaced the daily tubes with my stash of NOS, Tung-Sols to RCA-JAN-CRC-6SN7 VT-231, 2A3C to KenRad JAN-CKR-2A3 VT-95 and Sovtek to RCA-JAN-CRC-5U4G VT-244 and left the damper tweaks alone...refinement, delicateness, intricate details, revealing, ambience, air, clarity...
Launched at a time when amplifiers and loudspeakers were seen as being most critical to the performance of any system, the Sondek LP12 showed that extracting more information from the record itself was the most critical challenge. Quite simply, information lost at the source is lost forever...

So you asked what's the ultimate arm on LP12? Ekos or Aro?

Introducing Naim Aro the unipivot tonearm designed for LP12...The low-mass, Naim uni-pivot tone-arm is designed to offer the very best phono cartridges delicate yet precise support at all audio frequencies.

The The DV XX-2 MKII retains the benefit of the flux damper but features the Alinco-5 magnet and the similar rigid construction to the Te Kaitora Rua. Alnico magnets exhibit high magnetic flux density combining with a low coercive therefore magnetic resistance is lower than other magnetic types such as rare earth and ferrite, providing the exceptional stability of the XX-2 MKII output voltage. There is also the additional advantage of low magnetic and electrical resistance contributing to a discernable improvement in sound quality.

Sonically, the SP16L is pure fun as it easily unravels fine musical lines, bouncing along with surprising micro and macro-dynamic swings. The soundstage is big, airy and dimensional. Vocals have real body, making Ella, Frank or Diana sound like they're singing just for you. The SP16 is so good that it can be partnered with a vintage D100 or a new VT200MKII and sound glorious either way. And, it will make the sound come alive when it's used with an A/V processor....The SP16 is pure Audio Research, pure Class-A, with all-tube gain in line stage utilizing three select 12AX7 tubes in circuit...
